Be Thankful for a Healthy Smile and Help Keep It That Way

Thankful for Healthy Smile through General DentistryChances are, you’ll soon be gathered around a table with all your favorite people and your favorite foods. As you reminisce and discuss what blessings the year brought, you’ll also likely chow down on your grandma’s famous marshmallow-covered sweet potato casserole, and then face the toughest decision of the day, pecan or pumpkin pie. But before you set down to feast with your family, it can be helpful to know some general dentistry tips that can keep your smile healthy the whole holiday season through. Best of all, they’re simple and practical ways to keep your smile looking and feeling its best!

What You Eat Matters

While most dentists and doctors agree that sugar is fine in moderation, it should not be a main part of your diet, or your Thanksgiving plate. Rather than filing up on your favorite treats, start with healthy items like steamed green beans or other vegetables and lean protein, like white meat turkey. (“Candied” yams don’t count as healthy, either.)

By eating nutritious and delicious foods, first, you can help curb your cravings and limit the amount of sugar you consume. Just keep in mind that what you drink matters as much as what you eat. Avoid sodas and other sugary drinks. (Many natural juices contain gobs of added sugar.) And, be sure to drink plenty of water, especially if you’re partaking in caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. Not only will you feel better; it can help you rinse other beverages and foods from your teeth between brushings, and helps you produce saliva, which is a natural plaque fighter.

Other Ways to Care for Your Smile

When you get home, even if it’s after a long drive home from grandma’s, you still need to take the few minutes necessary to brush and floss your teeth. Doing so daily is one of the best ways to prevent plaque buildup, and the cavities and gum disease that often develop as a result of the buildup.

And, don’t forget to schedule bi-annual checkups and cleanings to keep your teeth and gums healthy. In fact, now is a great time to call your preventive dentist and schedule next year’s appointments!
